10 Confusing TV Shows That Nobody Understands

1. The Prisoner

The original indecipherable TV show and still the greatest to ever do it, Patrick McGoohan's cult sci fi mystery The Prisoner debuted in 1967 and had viewers hooked throughout its brief seventeen episode run.

What's it about?

A government agent quits his job, then awakens to find himself held captive in a small seaside town he can't escape.

That's it.

As our hero, played by McGoohan himself, attempts to discern who his captors are and why they've taken him hostage, the show offers tantalising glimpses of a massive, sprawling conspiracy which runs much of the outside world... And that's it.

The conspiracy is never explained, the captors are never revealed, and the trippy, surreal closing scenes of the final episode are a hilarious, disturbing slice of sixties psychedelia which raise many more questions than they answer.

McGoohan was forced into hiding when the series finished, unable to escape the demands of enraged fans who wanted an explanation. None was ever provided, and so this cult gem remains as mysterious as ever all these years on.

Far out, man.
