7. Sulu, Star Trek Voyager

When: VOY: S3, Ep 2 ‘Flashback’

One of two episodes that Star Trek produced to celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary, this episode has a wafer-thin plot and doesn’t pretend to be anything other than its tongue-in-cheek title. Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country had effectively closed the chapter on most of the TOS characters (more on that later) but had also done so in a very satisfying and fun away.

As it was fresh in the minds of most Trek fans at the time, it was a clever decision to step back in and use the actors (while they all still looked the same age)

Why It Was Great

For the sheer enjoyment of seeing Sulu finally get his time in the Captain’s chair fully realised, this episode marks a loving tribute to not only the recent film but the spirit of TOS and the 60s. Having Tuvok as the bridging character makes for a convenient way to interact with the characters on the Excelsior and it’s always fun to see characters from various series don alternate uniforms.

This episode stands a little above the others on this list because of the fun, the nostalgia and wit brought by George Takei to the screen one more time.
