6. Orange Is The New Black
The newest T.V show on the list is Orange is the New Black, a comedy-drama based on the real life story of Piper Kerman who spent 13 months in a women's prison after being arrested for money laundering and drug-trafficking. The show follows Piper Chapman played by Taylor Schilling as she begins her 15 month jail term for a crime she committed over ten years ago under the influence of Alex Vause, played by That 70s Show star Laura Prepon. Vause is the ex-lesbian lover of Chapman and as it turns out, she is also the one who gave Chapman's name to the police. Taking this into account, I'm sure you can imagine Chapman's surprise when she discovers she will be spending the next 15 months of her life with this woman. Aside from the main plot, what is a really unique aspect of the show is the way in which the pasts of the the other inmates are revealed. Each episode we discover something new about each inmate which leads us to the reasons for their prison sentences. I'm not entirely convinced how realistic the portrayal of life in a women's prison is or how similar the show is to Kerman's real life prison experience, but as it's a comedy it doesn't really matter too much. And if it's dark, sarcastic lesbians that you're looking for, then this is definitely the show for you.
