10 Deadliest Alien Prisons In Doctor Who
5. Shada
Shada was a notorious Time Lord prison. Located in its own bubble outside of the universe, it was also famously missing in action.
Appearing in the eponymous 'unfinished' 1979/80 serial which was recently reanimated, this time-locked facility built into the side of an asteroid held the worst Gallifreyan criminals and Time Lord renegades, but also deadly creatures from across the time and space.
Included as inmates in writer Douglas Adams' original script were Daleks, Cybermen, Zygons, and Ice Warriors, stored within cryogenic cells around the base. Even the Master was said to have resided there for a period before escaping to Earth in the Third Doctor's tenure.
BBC's original reanimated webcast from 2003 also included Arthur Dent and Zaphod Beeblebrox imprisoned there as nods to Adams' famous protagonists from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
In Shada's planned TV appearance, Dronirdian criminal and scientist Doctor Skagra was searching for Salyavin - a Time Lord renegade with the ability to project thoughts into other people's minds. Believing Salyavin had knowledge of the prison Shada, he needed the renegade's help to break into the facility and stage a jailbreak. He was unable to locate him, however, as Salyavin had retired to Cambridge, Earth, where he had assumed the identity of the kindly Professor Chronotis.
Finally tracking Chronotis down, Skagra aimed to kidnap him and make his way to Shada, only to have his plans foiled by the Fourth Doctor and Romana. Tricking Skagra's computer into aiding him, the Doctor managed to send Skagra and some escaped inmates back through the time vortex to the forgotten prison.
