10 Doctor Who Big Finish Moments That Will SHOCK You
3. Absent Friends - Phone Calls
Another entry from Doom Coalition 3. The Doctor, Liv, and Helen arrive in 1998, in the village of Calcot, where residents have been given new mobile phones to make up for a new transmission mast being installed. When described like that, that doesn't really sell the story, but what follows is one of Big Finish's deepest and most emotional stories to date.
Residents believe the mast is behind some funny goings-on in the village where they are getting bizarre phone calls. The first call we are shown is a landlady receiving a call from her son, who has been dead for several years. Therefore, residents believe they are being subjected to some sick joke.
Liv eventually receives one such call, from her father, who she lost years in her past, which from 1998 is far in the future. When speaking to her father, she asks him to tell her something he said to her years ago, after this Liv believes whatever is doing this is simply using the people's memories.
Later on, after their investigation, the Doctor decides that there is nothing actually behind the calls, they simply occur due to local time distortion, which means Liv was really speaking to her father. After this, the phone rings again, and Liv answers the phone. The moments that follow are beautifully portrayed by actress Nicola Walker, and the moment never fails to move.
A further subplot of the story is Helen visiting her brother, who is still around as she is from the 1960s. More strong emotional scenes pan out with the audience learning a lot about how Helen's travels in the TARDIS effected her family, even having to pretend she is her own daughter. The final part of this subplot is Helen receiving a phone call too, from her now deceased brother, who died shortly after her visit.
This audio story is so highly regarded that in 2017 it won a BBC Audio Award, which is rightly deserved for one of the company's most powerful stories.
