10 Doctor Who Characters That Should Return

1. The Eighth Doctor

Paul McGann certainly had a poor experience on Doctor Who, given his backdoor pilot (The TV Movie) ultimately failed in landing his incarnation a full American series with FOX. Sure, some could argue that this was for the best. However, it meant that the Eighth Doctor was left in the dark, with The TV Movie being his only physical appearance. Since Russell T Davies chose to start the New Series with a clean slate, it seemed like Paul McGann would never return on screen.

Luckily, he was finally graced the opportunity to shine once more for the mini-episode, The Night of the Doctor. Since then fans have been pinning for his return, given how seamlessly he slipped back into the role, as if he'd never been away. Then again, an argument could be made as to why he didn't feature in The Day of the Doctor. But I digress.

One of the main reasons I delved deep into Big Finish was because I wanted to explore the Eighth Doctor's journey. From his Main Range outings, the Eighth Doctor Adventures, his Time War range, The War Master, Susan's War, The Diary of River Song, to even The Legacy of Time (amongst many other appearances). Paul McGann has used the audio format to translate his version of the iconic character into an actual entity that we can follow and fall in love with. For me at least, he has become one of my favourite Doctor's next to Tom Baker and Matt Smith's incarnations.

Personally, I'd love to see Paul McGann given some well earned screen time, allowing him to channel all the hard work he's put in over the years with Big Finish. It worked perfectly for The Night of the Doctor, so why can't it work in a full episode, or even a series of episodes? Heck, why not have him around for an entire series, where the plotline revolves around the dimensions of time folding in on themselves, and the Thirteenth Doctor and the Eighth Doctor's timelines converge, forcing them to work together to solve the catastrophe. Or, at the very least, make sure he has a massive role in the 60th Anniversary Special.
