10 Doctor Who Comic Book Characters Who Should Appear In The Show
6. Destrii
Due to the Doctor Who comics' unlimited budget, characters don't have to conform to those TV-producing struggles such as 'casting human actors'. Destrii, an amphibian-looking alien from the planet Oblivion, who utilised a human-shaped hologram shell, was once a companion of the Eighth Doctor throughout the DWM comics.
Armed with a 'lightsaber', a 'shoot-first, ask questions later' philosophy, and possible romantic feelings for her Doctor, Destrii was a kick-ass and unique traveller in time and space. Introduced in 2001, 'Destriianatos' was one of the first distinctly alien companions to appear in the Whoniverse - with previous alien companions such as Leela, Romana, and Nyssa resembling humans.
First meeting the Eighth Doctor on the spacecraft Ophidius which had eaten the TARDIS, Destrii later joined the Doctor's travels when he encountered the gun-toting Oblivioner again in 1875 Nebraska. Despite thinking Destrii to be 'egocentric' and 'with a violent streak wider than the Gobi Desert', the Doctor saw something kind within her and sought to reform her as his travelling companion. Together, they encountered Future Cybermen in present-day London and she even watched the Doctor absorb the time vortex to defeat them.
Her departure from the Whoniverse has been left off-page, as the following comic featured the Ninth Doctor as it ran into the TV show's 2005 revival. Destrii recently returned to the DWM comics to team up with the Twelfth Doctor, but we still don't have a clear idea of how or why they parted in the first place.
With a more diverse TARDIS team in the current series, seeing Destrii in live-action and joining the Doctor would certainly add some much-needed alien love to the show.
Galactic Rating: Underrated.
