10 Doctor Who Companions Who Were Better Than Their Doctors

8. Charley Pollard (India Fisher)

Out of all of Big Finish's original audio drama companions, Charley Pollard is easily the greatest. The Eighth Doctor€™s first two seasons revolved primarily around her story with the Doctor helplessly looking on as he tried to save her from the paradox he created when he rescued her from a burning airship (and considering he later died whilst trying to rescue somebody from a crashing ship, it just goes to show how much he doesn't learn!). But Charley wasn€™t just a story (don't worry, Clara isn't n this list!) and she wasn€™t just a polarised character in the way that Leela was a €œno nonsense independent woman!€ or that fellow audio companion Evelyn Smythe is "motherly". She was a perfect compromise between the two. This worked brilliantly against the Eighth Doctor. Although they were both able to spur each other on, they were also able to reel each other in, too. That and the fact that she was the prime focus of the incredible The Chimes of Midnight, in which her presence elevates what is already the greatest audio drama into the greatest piece of Doctor Who in any medium. A brilliant companion but with such a good Doctor that she has to remain, rather aptly, at number eight.
