10 Doctor Who Companions Who Were Better Than Their Doctors

9. The Brigadier (Nicholas Courtney)

These two hated each other at the start of the Third Doctor's tenure and were only working together out of a desire not to see the child of a pre-universe God consume the Earth by inhabiting plastics. The Doctor hated his authoritarian ways and the violent nature he adopted in order to solve problems (for example, committing genocide over giving peace talks). As the two worked together more, however, they eventually grew into firm friends. While the Third Doctor retained his renegade ways for the most part, the Brigadier became a much more amusing and empathetic character. In fact, you only have to watch one of the duller expositionary scenes in their final story together, Planet of the Spiders, to see just how much the Brigadier had evolved as a person.
