Billy Hanshaw is a professional motion graphics designer and Doctor Who fan, who was keen to move from the corporate work he was doing and into television and film. In order to better demonstrate what he could do, Hanshaw created his own Doctor Who title sequence as a proof of concept to show potential clients. The sequence had the TARDIS fall not through space, but a literal rendering of time with clock faces, cogs and fob watches all featuring.

The title sequence was uploaded to YouTube, where it went viral amongst Doctor Who fans. One fan it caught the attention of was showrunner Steven Moffat, who was working on Peter Capaldi's first series as the Doctor. Moffat called Hanshaw's concept the first truly original concept since the first one, and decided to reach out to him.

Receiving a call from producer Brian Minchin, the designer thought he was being wound up but he was soon working with the team in BBC Wales to create the Twelfth Doctor's title sequence. It was a huge career boost for Hanshaw, who recently created his own kaleidoscopic title sequence for the Jodie Whittaker era.
