10 Doctor Who Moments The Actors Hated

Long before Doctor Who got a serious injection of cash from Mickey Mouse, the show was on something of a shoestring budget.

Combined with the limited technology and resources available at the time, this means that a lot of those early episodes, though wonderful stories, look quite dated by modern standards.

But even at the time, some people weren't impressed by the special effects that were on display – including one of the Doctors.

According to his son Michael, Patrick Troughton wasn't a fan of the costumes used in the 1967 serial The Underwater Menace. Troughton's third outing as the Second Doctor, this story features the Time Lord and his companions Ben, Polly, and Jamie travelling to Atlantis, where they encounter a race of half-humans, half-fish.

The appearance of these creatures was reportedly the subject of an argument Troughton had with director Julia Smith, in which he lamented the "ridiculous costumes and make-up of the fish people". He wasn't alone in his disdain either, as producer Innes Lloyd likened the creatures to "something from a '50s American B movie."

While old costumes like this have a certain charm to them these days, it's interesting to see that back in the '60s, even the makers of the show were frustrated with the limited reach of their resources.
