10 Doctor Who Moments The Actors Hated

4. Peter Davison Vs. The Plasmatons

Peter Davison had the toughest of tough tasks when he became the Doctor. As the immediate successor to the much-heralded Tom Baker, Davison's incarnation was always going to face more scrutiny than most, but it's a challenge he rose to.

His debut season was a solid run of stories, but as is the case with every season of Doctor Who, it wasn't without its duds – and the biggest dud in this case was the final story, Time-Flight, which even Davison cannot defend.

Time-Flight pits the Doctor and his companions against the Master, who is kidnapping planes in another of his madcap schemes. Serving as alien minions in this story are the Plasmatons, masses of protein held together by psychic energy – which is the kind way of saying that they were essentially big ol' blobs of nothingness.

While reflecting on Time-Flight in the Season 19 Collection boxset, Davison straight-up called the Plasmatons "rubbish". He then explained:

"They were just nothing at all, they were lumps of polystyrene. It was just one more indignity that was heaped upon the story. 'What can we do for these Plasmatons? Let's just make them lumps of polystyrene!'"

In Davison's mind, this was a sign that the BBC had run out of money, and lacked faith in Doctor Who. He wasn't miles off in that regard, as the corporation's poor treatment of the show was one of the reasons for its cancellation in the late 1980s.

He also wasn't wrong that the Plasmatons were absolute pants.
