10 Doctor Who Storylines That Fans Pretend Never Happened

2. The Time Lords Are Literally Gods

In the interregnum between the 1996 film and the 2005 revival, Doctor Who made a brief comeback as a poorly animated webcast. This 2001 production, called Death Comes to Time, featured the Seventh Doctor, which was an odd decision since Paul McGann had already taken over as the peripatetic Time Lord. The strange choices didn't end there, either. In this story, Ace not only becomes a Time Lord but the Seventh Doctor dies after being revealed as a superpowered God of the Fourth. Fans pretend this story never took place for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it blatantly seeks to cancel out the earlier McGann film which, despite having a couple of ropey parts, was fondly remembered by most fans. Also, making the Doctor an all-powerful god would have effectively ended the series, even if the webcast hadn't killed off the Doctor. Once the Doctor becomes a god, he can get out of any situation no matter how dangerous. And without the protagonist being in genuine peril each episode, there's precious little in the way of suspense and excitement for the audience. For all these reasons, Death Comes to Time is generally shunned. By contrast, another webcast called Scream of the Shalka finds itself in an equally tricky position continuity-wise, but is still much loved nonetheless.
