10 Excellent Cartoon Reboots That Surprised Fans
5. Thundercats (2011)
Gone too soon and missed by fans and newcomers alike, the visibly anime-influenced 2011 reboot of the Thundercats series combined gorgeous art with great animation and epic storytelling, honouring its equally beautifully-animated original series.
Lion-O was a younger, more untrained version of his original 80s counterpart, and the overarching narrative was intriguing and exciting. The animation was stunning and complex, with the same sort of high-quality 2D movement that characterised the original series, but updated for a more modern audience.
In terms of other series, the show is very similar to the more recent Voltron series from Netflix, with great animation, great action, and excellent voice acting, with more complex and compelling characters and relationships.
It's disappointing that this series was axed after one season over behind the scenes issues. The hostility for the newer, more comedic reboot promised in 2019, while over-the-top, is likely tied to this version of the show being cancelled, despite the two being entirely different styles of show.
In an age of cancelled TV series being continued at the behest of fans, most of those who loved the 2011 reboot still have hope for the future of the action-packed, anime-inspired series.
