One of the reasons that Game of Thrones became so popular is because it is uniquely dark while also being a truly fantastic story filled with monsters and magic. The First Law is similar.

The series consists of three books telling one tale and then three separate novels set in the same universe. This would allow the adaptation to tell a longer, wider story than the one told in the series itself.

The main story primarily deals with a bunch of low-level players - including barbarians and soldiers - as they attempt to deal with a world at war with itself. Imagine the episode in which Tyrion, Bron, and Shae sit around, telling stories about their trails and heartbreaks while awaiting the next day of war, in which they'll almost surely die. Imagine an entire series like that.
