10 Forgotten Horror TV Shows You MUST Watch

3. The Kingdom

Riget The Kingdom
DR

Also known as Riget in Denmark his 1990s Danish absurdist black comedy was developed by Lars von Trier and Tomas Gislason and was renowned for its surreal tone, characters and unusual sepia colour grade. Von Trier was inspired by David Lynch's seminal work Twin Peaks, as well as the French miniseries Belphegor.

Set in Copenhagen's Rigshospitalet (The National Hospital), the series follow three expectedly surreal storylines. Things kicks off with Sigrid Drusse (Kristen Rolffes), a patient who begins to investigate an unusual scream and the death of a girl who has not moved on the next realm, and Dr Palle Bondo (Baard Owe), a pathologist with an unhealthy obssession for his deceased patient's liver.

Finally, Stig Helmer (Ernst-Hugo Jaregard) is a neurosurgeon who is trying to cover up his involvement in a surgery gone wrong. As bleak as it sounds, Riget balanced affairs by adopting a surreal tone and twisted sense of humour.

It takes a while to get to its unusual elements, and some of its humour and tonal choices are very cultural specific, but once it finds its footing it becomes one of von Trier's most unique and delightfully left-field projects.
