10 Great Anime For People Who Hate Anime

Don't hate! Appreciate!

Cowboy Bebop
Anime Limited

Any longtime anime fan will tell you that the medium is incredible, offering countless amazing, unique stories that can't be found anywhere else.

However, any honest anime fan will also tell you that it's not all that easy to break into. To be completely blunt, many of the complaints from people who hate anime are fairly valid.

Unfortunate tropes such as awful sexual fan service and rampant sexism in general, along with repeated, almost copy and pasted series show that the medium has more than its fair share of problems. So, to someone on the outside looking in, you can understand how these problematic aspects can be more than off-putting.

That's not even to mention the fact that many of the most popular hit shows have episodes totalling in the hundreds, making the mere thought of trying to dive into them exhausting.

With these things all in mind, what this list aims to do is to highlight several anime that even the harshest critics of the medium can enjoy. Even more so, they each function as really great starting off points for anyone curious, yet hesitant, to give anime a try.

10. Sweetness And Lightning

Cowboy Bebop
CrunchyRoll

Sweetness and Lightning follows a man attempting to bond with his young daughter after his wife passes away. Along the way, he gets some help from new and old friends alike.

This wonderful, heartfelt anime tells the kind of story that would make the Grinch's heart grow three times its size. There is no conflict or drama to be found here besides the occasional father-daughter kerfuffle. That may sound boring to some, but this lovely series is anything but.

Watching the relationship between the father and daughter grow after suffering such a painful loss will make you laugh and cry in equal measure. The character's journeys are aided by the fact that the series avoids any and all problematic tropes that plague the medium. It aims to tell a simple story about people bonding over cooking, and does just that.

Speaking of cooking by the way, do not watch this on an empty stomach. The food here looks absolutely delicious, and you'll wish you could reach through your screen and grab a bite. At 12 episodes, Sweetness and Lightning will steal your heart with its unapologetic wholesomeness.
