Sanrio, the world famous company behind the Hello Kitty franchise, are masters of character design and mass appeal, this is not in debate. But the idea of the creators of Hello Kitty making a cynical workplace comedy in the same vein as The Office is one of the dumbest ideas ever, an idea you'd normally see on SNL as a joke.
And yet, Aggretsuko isn't just funny, it's REALLY damn funny!
And a lot of that has to do with the hilariously contradicting imagery of adorable Sanrio designed characters set against the hum drum setting of a typical Japanese office, and matched with biting, cynical dialogue. It's one of the oldest tricks in the comedy book, but Aggretsuko shows why it sticks around: you do it right, and it will pay out for you in dividends.
Especially when you add on a balls-to-the-wall insane death metal soundtrack for our cute characters to dance and sing along to in the opening credits. But the reason it sticks with people is because behind its dry wit is a genuine optimism for people regardless of how crap their situations are.
