When you write a show based around the flashy, dangerous behind-the-scenes world of hip-hop, you'd better make sure you bring it hard when it comes to the soundtrack.

Thankfully, Empire did just that.

Following the fictional Lyon family and their wildly successful entertainment dynasty, Empire is home to a staggering amount of original music, as well as an impressive soundtrack of hip-hop and R&B classics.

Timbaland was brought on as executive music producer for the show, and he was able to secure the likes of Jay-Z, Drake and Prince for the soundtrack, as well as artists like Snoop Dogg, Courtney Love, Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys appearing on the show to collaborate with its fictional stars.

Empire's soundtrack is so good because it blends its original music and its soundtrack so seamlessly, all brought to life by a central cast that make it all feel like a genuine exploration of the world on the other side of the recording studio.

There's murder, illegitimate children, fraud, and just about every other dramatic plot device you can think of, and its all underpinned by excellently employed tunes.
