9. Season 1, Episode 22 (Ethel Merman)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlGohSLMLY8 While later episodes featured more pop and rock hits of the era, the Muppet Show often relied on classic tunes to engage its audience, and engaging an audience is something Ethel Merman does well in this episode. After explaining that the Muppets admired Merman so much that they couldn't decide who would do a duet with her, the regulars of the show all perform a medley of showtunes with the broadway star). Merman's musical prowess brings out Miss Piggy's competitive side in this episode, and their duet of "Anything You Can Do" shows Piggy at her conceited best. This episode also gives us this "not-for-kids" exchange, courtesy of Irving Bizarre, Fozzie's diminutive agent: Irving: Now bad looking for a pig...want me to handle you? Miss Piggy: I already have an agent, Shortstuff . Irving: I don't want to be your agent, I just want to handle you. In addition to a hilarious script and great musical numbers, this episode also features the simple yet innovative work of a guest puppeteer, Richard Bradshaw, in a skit involving an ostrich, a mouse, a hippo, and the laws of physics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNsJ6kDVbfk
