10 Greatest Star Trek Callbacks
7. Spock's Pet Sehlat
We first learned about Spock's childhood pet sehlat in the Original Series episode Journey To Babel, when his mother, Amanda, described it to McCoy as 'a fat teddy bear' (which McCoy found quite amusing).
We later got to see his sehlat when Spock travelled to the past to save his younger self in the Animated Series episode Yesteryear. We learned that the sehlat was more like a giant tiger than a fat teddy bear, and was named I-Chaya. I-Chaya died when he and Spock were attacked by another Vulcan beast, a le-matya.
Spock was bullied relentlessly and iolated as a child because of his Human blood, but I-Chaya was always there with him through it all. In the Strange New Worlds episode Spock Amok, Spock finally mentioned his pet again, explaining to Chapel that bonding with I-Chaya helped him through his struggles.
