10 Horror TV Shows That Broke All The Rules

4. American Horror Story - A New Kind Of Anthology

Anthology shows have been around for a damn long time, but traditionally they cover a different story with different characters every episode. The likes of Tales From The Crypt, Tales From the Darkside and The Twilight Zone see every new episode welcome in a new set of characters with stories to tell, in some cases with a narrator bookending the episodes with some sort of monologue.

It is quite the genre-bending approach then to extend each story to a whole season’s length, making the series anthology by way of each season containing a new story. American Horror Story wasn’t necessarily the first ever show to do this but it certainly is the most popular, and has been followed by 2016’s also popular Channel Zero.

First coming to screens in 2011, American Horror Story has since gone through ten stories over ten seasons - some of which refer back to each other. Its trend of keeping as many same cast members as possible, as well as its self-referential approach have caused quite a stir over the years, just a few of the elements that make it the revered show it is. Most people cannot name another show quite like it in both tone and format, and that really is a credit to it.
