Blackadder Goes Forth only had six episodes, so it’s not like any of the characters had huge space to make an impact. As some of the most recognisable characters in the history of British television though, they certainly made the most of it.

For the uninitiated, Blackadder was a historical comedy which ran for four seasons, although each season had a different name to reflect the different time period; Blackadder Goes Forth was obviously the fourth, and took place in the trenches of the First World War.

Lord Flashheart was played by the magnificent late Rik Mayall, who previously appeared in single episodes of The Black Adder & BlackAdder II, the second time as the original Flashheart. In Goes Forth, Flashheart is a boorish, arrogant Air Force Squadron Commander, one whose personality immediately clashes with the dry and wry Blackadder.

Flashheart is the centre of attention in every room, and has no problems getting the affections of the ladies. Rik Mayall said he was honoured to be offered a part in the final season (after missing the Third) and only agreed if he could have more laughs than star and good friend Rowan Atkinson.

Considering every line he delivers is gold, he certainly got his wish. Woof!
