10 Insane Doctor Who Rumours That Never Happened

4. TARDIS No More

You don't mess with the TARDIS. Look at the outrage back in 2004 when the production team had the audacity to make the new police box prop "too fat" and "got the windows all wrong". 1980s producer John Nathan-Turner knew just how integral the blue box was to the show, and also knew what a good bit of publicity it would be to threaten to do away with the TARDIS' police box shell.

Perhaps buoyed by the response to the shocking cliffhanger at the end of Frontios Part One, where the TARDIS is blown to smithereens, he decided to promote the opening of Season 22 by telling the press that the shape of the TARDIS was about to change.

Which it does, albeit briefly, in a bit of disposable padding in the opening minutes of 1985's Attack of the Cybermen. Deciding to finally fix the chameleon circuit, the newly regenerated Sixth Doctor lands on Earth inside a fabulously painted French dresser. As the ship continues to change shape to the chagrin of the Doctor, it eventually resettles on the police box shape. Thank goodness.
