10 Most Insane Storylines In Doctor Who

5. City Of Death

Starring the 4th Doctor, this would have the distinction of being the most watched serial of his era of Doctor Who, and part three would be the highest rated episode of any episode of Doctor Who until the 2005 series began, although this may have been due to the strike at ITV that meant that the BBC was the only channel on British TV actually working at the time. Essentially, the plot sees an alien with a head like a puzzled sponge and a dashing line in evening wear stealing priceless art treasures in Paris in order to finance experiments in time travel. An explosion 400 million years ago had wrecked their ship and fragmented him into several identical versions of himself, each stranded in different time periods. The lone but multiple survivor is convinced that he can use time travel to prevent the destruction of his ship: the Doctor theorises that it was this explosion that helped create life on earth, and that preventing it will wipe that life out as if it had never existed. There are six copies of the Mona Lisa involved, a Countess€ it€™s all a little confusing, but absolutely brilliant. A little known fact is that the title is a play on words, referring to Paris€™ traditional nickname, the City Of Love. Cité de l'amour€ cité de la mort. Very nice.
