AMC's The Walking Dead has its fair share of detractors, many of whom feel the series' quality has waned as it continues. Despite those complaints, many fans still have a great deal of love and interest in the show's many characters, with Carol standing as one of the most beloved.

She's had one hell of a character arc with a ton of development over the years, and it's hard to imagine the show's success without her.

As it happens, she should have died a long time ago, back in season three. Special Effects Artist Greg Nicotero explained how it almost went down in an interview with SFX:

In the episode where T-Dog died, there was a moment where Carol was going to die in lieu of T-Dog’s character. At that point, there was some concern in the writers’ room that they didn’t know where to take her character.

That was back in season three, and now, there's no way Carol will be killed off the series. Creator Robert Kirkman came out and said as much, though that was back in 2015, and as time has demonstrated, there's no real guarantee of safety for any of the characters of The Walking Dead.
