A pivotal moment for the show and the character of the Doctor, without which there would be no Doctor Who today. Unfortunately, the episode is not available in its full form. This episode is full of memorable stuff. Not only is there the regeneration at the beginning, but there is Patrick Troughton’s first performance as the Doctor. It’s easy to forget how important his first episode would have been. The concept of changing Doctors was completely new, so it was up to Troughton to convince the audience he could take over the role after the popularity of Hartnell. And he succeeds. He is great as the Doctor. Sometimes serious, sometimes silly, and sometimes both – like when he is asserting his authority as the supposed ‘Earth inspector’ only to be distracted by a bowl of fruit.
