The Eleventh Doctor hits the ground running with his first episode, establishing the energetic and goofy personality that would define him throughout the series. This is wonderfully showcased in his opening sequence with the young Amy Pond.

The episode begins with the Doctor crashing into Amy’s garden and asking for lots of different foods, only to immediately reject them. It’s a comedic and fast-paced sequence, which has the Doctor declaring he loves a certain food, only to spit it out dramatically. He even throws a plate of bread and butter out of the house in disgust. Finally, he realises what he needs, the bizarre combination of fish fingers and custard. The cinematography, music and Smith’s acting are all excellent, and take the audience on an enjoyably funny ride. What makes this great moment even more memorable is that Who fans, after seeing the episode, actually started to try fish fingers and custard for themselves! The odd combo has since become synonymous with the new show and is nearly as famous as the Fourth Doctor’s jelly babies.
