10 Most Gratifying Star Trek Deaths
4. Senator Vreenak
The Romulan Senator Vreenak, is lured to DS9 by intelligence of Dominion duplicity. (Hypocrite much?) Sisko and Garak have only falsified evidence, though, and Vreenak knows it right away. He leaves in a huff, but his shuttle is soon destroyed by a bomb planted by Garak.
The death itself is off-screen and really nothing unusual. Ships explode all the time, especially on Deep Space Nine. But the lengths Garak went to kill the senator make for perhaps the Cardassian spymaster’s finest hour.
Garak’s plan had always been the bombing, but he wove such an intricate plot that the entire episode is a single long con pulled not just on Sisko but also on the viewers. There’s no fun in spoiling it, so go watch “In The Pale Moonlight”, DS9’s greatest episode by far.
Suffice to say, Garak is an evil genius – so evil that he crushes Sisko’s moral compass (with the captain’s full cooperation) and leaves Sisko almost grateful for the opportunity all the same.
Vreenak’s murder is the prime example of the cold, calculating Cardassian mind.
