9. The Twelfth Doctor's Desk (The Pilot)

The Twelfth Doctor has a reputation for being quite grumpy and cold, but secretly, he's a big fuzzy ball of sentimental old fluff - even in spite of his furiously angry eyebrows.

If his devastation at Clara's death or his romantic final date with River weren't enough to prove just how emotional and sensitive Twelve actually is, then the photos on his desk in the Series 10 opener certainly rammed that point home.

The very first scene of this episode is set inside the Doctor's office at St Luke's University, and perched atop his desk, many attentive viewers spotted photos of both River Song (the Doctor's wife), and Susan Foreman (the Doctor's granddaughter).

Now sure, these aren't really easy to miss, but the photos were something that a lot of Who fans decided to hit pause on regardless, just to relish in how great a nod they were to not only the show's recent history, but its classic history too.

Pausing here also allowed fans to pick out all the other easter eggs hidden around the Doctor's office, such as the cup of sonic screwdrivers kept next to the photos. Ten virtual cookies if you can identify them all!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
