Supergirl's first season was not exactly the confident debut the Maid of Might needed to gain the same popularity as the Flash or Green Arrow, but it still had its redeemable qualities. In addition to its breezy tone and winning lead performance, its overarching villain provided the requisite challenge to pose a threat to Supergirl, her allies, and the planet.

In addition to being a planetary-level threat, Astra provided personal strife for Kara as she was the heroine's maternal aunt, a revelation that added layers to the first season's conflict. Her motivations and descent into villainy are also understandable, as she wished to protect the remnants of Kryptonian society and put measures in place to preserve her race.

However, her employment of the Myriad program was an indication that the Kryptonian general had gone too far in her goals and leaned dangerously close to subjugation rather than salvation. Astra ultimately lost her life following a confrontation with Alex Danvers in which the latter stabbed the former with a Kryptonite knife.
