10 Most Underrated Performances In Game Of Thrones
1. Alfie Allen - Theon Greyjoy
Theon experienced one of the largest evolutions in Game of Thrones. As a result, Allen had one of the most difficult roles to play. Thankfully, his performance was amongst the best that the show had to offer.
As with Melisandre, Theon was a morally ambiguous character who was neither a true villain nor a true hero. Though he was loyal to the Starks in the first season, it was clear that he was far from content with his position as Eddard Stark’s ward.
After betraying the Starks in Season 2, Theon was then subjected to relentless torture by Ramsay. During these scenes, Allen made watchers of the show take enormous pity on Theon despite his immoral actions in the previous season. Indeed, it was impossible not to feel the upmost sympathy for his character as he begged to be killed. Even after escaping from Winterfell, Theon carried the scars inflicted by Ramsay wherever he went and was never able to fully recover to his former self.
Though Theon was in many ways broken beyond repair, he did bow out honorably during the Battle of Winterfell when he defended Bran against the Night King. The eighth season may have received a mixed response, but Theon’s final act was a great closing scene for Allen.
Possibly due to the ever-changing nature of his character, Allen's performance isn't praised enough, particularly amongst more casual fans of the show. Yet with the exception of Jamie Lannister, no other character had an arc as dynamic as Theon’s. Despite the numerous requirements of such a character, Allen managed to nail every aspect of Theon’s lengthy evolution.
