When Bojack decided to leave L.A for two months to go and see his old friend Charlotte, he essentially cut everyone from his life off. Princess Carolyn couldn't contact him, they had to finish the Secretariat movie without him, and he missed Todd's improv graduation, something that was very important to him.

As Bojack returned, Todd moved on, going aboard the Giggleship with his improv group that actually turned out to be something of a cult. When he found out the group's leader, Copernicus, was a fraud, he was essentially brainwashed and held against his will.

While at the movie premiere for Secretariat, Bojack was told by Lenny Turtletaub and Ana Spanikopita that anyone who truly knew him would never love him. This made him think of Todd and how he always saw the good in him. Rushing from the premiere, Bojack took his boat out to the Giggleship and rescued Todd from his captivity.

What followed on the 'Escape from L.A' was an incredibly touching moment between the two. Earlier Bojack had told Todd that he didn't remember their first morning together, but it soon came back to him. Bojack called Todd his best friend, and told him that letting him stay with him was the best thing he ever did.
