10 Nu-Who Storylines That Doctor Who Spin-Off Media Did First
7. The Sympathetic Dalek
Russell T Davies found the perfect story to reintroduce the Daleks to new audiences in the form of Robert Shearman's Sixth Doctor audio adventure Jubilee from 2003. The core idea of Jubilee is similar to that of Dalek, a narcissistic leader keeps a lone Dalek prisoner to maintain their ego. Jubilee also features a plot line involving the Doctor fighting a war against the Daleks, but this one forms an eventually aborted timeline.
The most interesting thing about Jubilee and Dalek is how they dovetail with regard to the cultural legacy of the Daleks. In Jubilee, the Dalek is a relic of a bygone age, immortalised in fiction and merchandising. If Genesis of the Daleks was about overtly stating the influence of the Nazis on Terry Nation's creations, then Jubilee is about how popular culture distances the horrors of history through appropriating them for entertainment.
None of this is present in Dalek, of course, and nor should it be. That story is about introducing the Doctor's greatest enemy, and revealing them to be the mysterious opponent in the Time War. Where Shearman reflected on the Daleks' legacy in Jubilee, he redraws their future in Dalek.
