6. Prom Night Dumpster Baby
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRj-S8Aklcw Has teenage pregnancy and unwanted babies ever been a successful subject for comedy? This song and dance routine, featuring a dumped, Sinatra-esque newborn twirling his umbilical cord like a cane, certainly attempts it in one of Family Guy's more uncomfortable moments. It could be argued that the scene doesn't really work because unplanned teenage pregnancy is a subject that deserves attention and remedies, not mockery, or that it's irredeemably offensive to make light of the fact that unwanted children are dumped every single day in the UK and US, a shocking and tragic state of affairs. I tend to think that the scene doesn't work because it's simply just not that funny. While Family Guy often addresses subject matter equally as dark as this and still manager to maintain the humour witness Death's necrophilia on his first ever date and Quagmire's multiple perversions the show works best when making the subject matter grossly ludicrous and over the top. This short sequence can be taken to be offensive simply because it's too close to home to contain much humour. A rare case of Family Guy not so much overstepping the mark as missing it completely.
