10 Once Awesome TV Shows That Now Suck
3. Ripper Street
Ripperologists will tell you that the infamous Whitechapel Murders have left an indelible mark on popular culture. Films, books, TV shows, games and graphic novels have all featured featured Leather Apron and his various misdeeds - none more recently than the BBC's Ripper Street.
Although the series has just finished airing on the BBC, the show actually called it quits at the end of 2016 after being resurrected by Amazon. And not without good reason either; the first season of Ripper Street was a fun, enjoyable if not nonsensical ride through 19th century London and it was suitably atmospheric. The characters themselves too, managed to actually converse in a legible manner. Something that the final few seasons, sadly, somehow couldn't manage.
Not only do the characters in Ripper Street talk in mumbled tones and contrived platitudes, they do so in a kind of English that's inauthentic for the period. Dialogue is verbose, convoluted, and the overall arc behind the show's closing season just wasn't all that interesting.
If you're desperate for some great British period-accurate drama, then Peaky Blinders should, ideally, be your first port of call. Ripper Street just ain't worth the fuss.
