10 One-Time Saturday Night Live Hosts Who Should Host Again
8. Ed O'Neill
Hosted: January 13, 1990 In 1987, FOX Broadcasting made its push to become the fourth-television station in the United States, premiering two primetime shows that year: a sketch-comedy show called The Tracey Ullman Show; and a sitcom about a shoe salesman and his dysfunctional family called Married... with Children. Ed O'Neill played Al Bundy, the gruff but loveable loser dad, and a little more than two years later he was invited to host Saturday Night Live, becoming the first from a FOX sitcom to do so. The episode itself wasn't that memorable, but his appearance in that evening's Wayne's World sketch did lead to a reoccurring role in both Wayne's World movies as Glen, the deeply-troubled owner of Stan Mikita's Donuts. Since Married... with Children was cancelled in 1997, O'Neill had roles in several forgettable movies (The Bone Collector, Lucky Numbers) and cameos on television (The West Wing, 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter) but nothing strong enough to earn a second hosting gig Saturday Night. Of course, in 2009 O'Neill took the role of patriarch Jay Pritchard in the hit ABC sitcom Modern Family, and his television career has never been more successful. He's won four Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Acting Ensemble in a Comedy Series with his Modern Family co-stars, and his TV wife SofĂa Vergara hosted in 2012. Apart from Ty Burrell, there would be no better choice than O'Neill for another Modern Family veteran to host SNL once again.
The 'House is a father of two and husband of one in Minnesota. He is an improv comedian, and in his spare time follows WWE, MLB, The Simpsons, and Bob's Burgers. Growing up he was a huge fan of He-Man, and refuses to believe that it was in fact terrible.
