10 Overlooked TV Shows You Should Watch

8. Edge of Darkness

Millennium tv show
BBC

If you are expecting a box standard police show from Edge of Darkness, you are in for one hell of a shock. Part detective drama, part political thriller, this six-part series engages with nuclear and environmental anxieties which feel strikingly relevant, all the while maintaining the upmost tension.

Northern police officer Ronald Craven (Bob Peck) picks his daughter Emma (Joanne Whalley) up from an environmental group meeting at her university, whereupon she is shot dead on their front doorstep. Whilst the other officers think the death is the result of an attempt of Craven's life, after finding a Geiger counter and gun in her possession, Craven investigates whether his daughter was the intended target after all. From there, Edge of Darkness develops and deepens, becoming a truly gripping and complex piece of work. Without spoiling, the show ends at a destination far beyond what one might expect.

Featuring a celebrated score written by Michael Keenan and Eric Clapton, Troy Kennedy Martin's seminal drama is stellar work just waiting to be rediscovered with the BFI's poll of over 200 industry professionals ranking Edge of Darkness as the 15th Greatest British TV Programme of all time.
