4. Can You Read My Mind?

A voice-over can convey a lot of information to help move a story along, but it can also be one of the most annoying things ever if done badly. (I am looking at you Sex And The City where we get quality monologue the likes of Later that day, we arrived home.) In Dexters case, narration is the closest thing we can get to a graphic novel thought bubble and allows us as the audience to walk in Dexters shoes. Just like seeing Dexter go to work and hang out with his son, by making us privy to his thoughts, we can relate on a much more emotional level. This is a big reason of whats makes the show one of the purest forms of escapism. Watching a machete wielding maniac magically keep up with frightened teenagers in the woods is one thing, but hearing a killer mentally layout strategy and plan his attack takes us all to a completely different level.
