Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee’s 1998 comic reboot of Marvel's silver age property The Inhumans, was a dark and deliciously cinematic tale, feeling almost as if Clive Barker created his own twisted version of the X-Men. It had enough political intrigue and superhuman smash-ups to make it immediately viable for live-action.

When plans for a movie were scuppered, the appealing prospect of creating an ABC TV show linked to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was announced. Considering cult hits Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D and Agent Carter had been doing strong work for the network, it became eagerly awaited.

Add to that its pilot being filmed in IMAX and released in cinemas, and you had every reason to believe Marvel was gearing up for big things.

Then it dropped and the results were - interesting? No, actually it was an outright disaster.

Even from just a conceptual stage, taking the elaborate tone and careful atmosphere of the Jenkins run and shoehorning it into a cookie cutter fish-out-of-water scenario - with these aliens emplaced on present-day Hawaii - was as awful as it sounds.

Plus, costume and production values that were C-movie bad, performances that were flat (asides from a decent Ken Leung), and large helpings of cringe-worthy action scenes. It was a baffling result considering the money pumped into the production.
