10 Red Dwarf Episodes You Absolutely Must See

Now here's an episode that feels heavier than usual, with high stakes and a level of dramatic tension not often seen in the show. Serving as the final episode of Season Six, this episode ends on the mother of all cliffhangers and the worst part is that it went unresolved for four years. Not the longest wait Dwarf fans have had to endure, but still.

This episode first sees the Dwarfers encounter a minefield of "unreality pockets" which temporarily distort reality as a means of protecting an experimental ship. After countless hijinks caused by the pockets, the crew eventually reach the ship in question and discover that it contains a time drive - a device which allows for travel through time, but not space, making it useless in the depths of deep space.

Not long after though, they come face to face with future versions of themselves who have been using the time drive for years to live lives of opulence and luxury, hobnobbing with some of the most vile people from history. It quickly becomes apparent that these future selves are drastically different to the present day Dwarfers, leading to an epic confrontation that is actually quite intense, and features a moment of true heroism from Rimmer. To go into more detail would spoil a brilliant episode.

On a lighter note, the cast do brilliant work at playing their older, geriatric selves, striking a perfect balance between hilarious and threatening. And just wait until you see what happened to Lister!
