10 Revived TV Shows That Should've Stayed Cancelled
3. Veronica Mars
The Kristen Bell-starring teen detective show took equal cues from classic noir and the works of Joss Whedon - surprisingly hard edged, long running detective cases couched in rapid fire, pop culture saturated banter and glossy romantic plots. The first two seasons were dynamite, so distinctive and smart, superbly acted by Bell and co (especially Enrico Colantoni as Veronica’s father Keith - it’s one of the best parent/child relationships ever depicted).
The third season saw the show jump networks, send Veronica off to college, and lose a bit of quality, though the vibe was still great. Then, it was cancelled. This wasn’t a huge surprise - ratings were never great - but it ends on a downer, and an inconclusive one at that.
Fans clamoured for more, and eventually a film was made, followed by a fourth season. Unfortunately the reboot shows that you should never go back. Out of high school, Veronica feels a little directionless; its USP is gone, and the film and latter series are powered heavily by the fumes of nostalgia.
The cast and crew’s love for the concept is palpable, but that alone sadly doesn’t make for an engaging product.
