Doctor Who has been a staple of British Sci-Fi TV since the 60’s and has spread all across the world into one of the biggest TV franchises of all time. Fans were smitten with the sonic screwdriver toting, regenerating alien time traveller. The series had a modern revival back in 2005 and has sky-rocketed ever since, inspiring spin offs, games and a dedicated fanbase.

The long-standing BBC drama hit a few highs and lows since its revival however a major controversy with fans was when Peter Capaldi came on board to become the 12th Doctor. His angry and inconsistent take on the character left many fans feeling alienated from their favourite show.

But, in Capaldi’s tenure, one introduction left any loyal fans remaining bemused. Instead of keeping the iconic sonic screwdriver, it was replaced with ‘Sonic Sunglasses’ aka a plain pair of Ray Bans.

Audiences hoped it was a gimmick for the episode but became more frustrated as the new sonic specs began to appear regularly. A petition was even created to have them removed from the show entirely. The show cheapened its iconic tool into a cheap gag and fans were not happy. The sunglasses were the final straw for a lot of fans as their favourite show a few years ago was now completely different.

I currently attend the University of Salford, studying Broadcast Journalism. That's it really. Told you there was nothing special. If you're really that desperate for something to do, follow me on socials. Yes, I do like that ego boost.
