10 Scrapped Ideas For Star Trek: Enterprise Season 5

3. Whispers Of The Romulan War

This leads on from the entry about the Temporal Cold War and about the 'Future Guy'. One idea was to have him revealed to be a Romulan agent, interfering with events in the past to protect the Empire in the future. The end of the Romulan arc in the fourth season promised that we would see them again, then of course we never did.

Had the show received a fifth season, the beginnings of the Romulan War would have been explored. It had long been established that before the events of Balance of Terror, the Federation and the Empire engaged in a brutal war, though never saw each others' faces. Enterprise cleverly acknowledged that the audience knew what they looked like, bringing them into the fourth season.

This could easily have allowed them to return in the fifth season, and even in later seasons again. The Dominion War had spanned two seasons of Deep Space Nine, so there was precedent to allow a multi-season war arc, especially with one of the greatest frenemies that Starfleet ever faced. As the events of the Romulan War led to consequences that continued well into the future, exploring it here would be the perfect opportunity to see exactly how bad this conflict got.
