The Death: While displaying symptoms of a mysterious flu, Karen was stabbed in the head along with David, and their bodies were brought outside where they were set on fire. The killers identity was initially a mystery before Carol admitted to doing it in a vain attempt to stop the disease from spreading. How It Changed Things: No disrespect to David, but he was quickly forgotten about. It was because of Tyreeses close emotional ties to Karen that her death meant so much more, both in his own journey of acceptance and his subsequent relationship with her killer. If Ed and Sophias deaths had triggered something within Carol, then Karen and Davids death was the place where we truly saw it unleashed for the first time. This was a rebirth for her, where she was no longer a helpless victim of abuse, but instead someone with real agency. She was now capable of making the difficult choices with an unwavering certainty that frightened even Rick. This would eventually result in Carols banishment from the prison but in her eventual return, she would come to resemble the character that Andrea became in the comics, filling a much needed void in the show.
