10 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching Arrested Development
2. Arrested Development Sued Arrested Development
The show is seemingly aware of things going on in the real world, and most of the time, these jokes are clear. There was one that most people probably didn't notice the first time they watched the show, and it had to do with the series' name.
Arrested Development wasn't just the name of the show, it was also the name of a band, and that band sued over copyright infringement. The 1980s Hip Hop group won their lawsuit against the Fox Network, and they walked away with a check for $10,000 in damages.
The show made several references to the lawsuit on the series, but most people didn't realize what was going on unless they knew about the suit from the press. In one episode, Lucille and Buster competed in a Motherboy Competition, and the narrator says, "Motherboy was also a heavy metal band. We are legally obligated to make the distinction."
They referenced it once more in the 11th episode of the first season when a newspaper flashes briefly on the screen. The article title falling just under the main one about Lucille reads, "Musician sues restaurant over use of name," which was another clear allusion to the lawsuit.
