10 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching Dexter
1. Father Knows Best
For those who aren't familiar with the series, Dexter's main influence is his stepfather called Harry, who provided him with his "code" to control his dark urges and use them only when it was deemed appropriate. Harry's code ensured that Dexter only killed people who had themselves committed murder and only once he had irrefutable proof that this was the case. In almost all cases, Dexter follows this code to the letter, with very few exceptions.
In the ninth episode of the first season, we learn that Dexter's biological father has only passed away recently, despite being told he was long dead. He travels to the house alongside Rita and Rudy (who is both his brother and the Ice Truck Killer : - neither fact is known to Dexter at this point) in order to sort out his father's affairs.
While other key points for the first season are created, continued and moved along by this process, the fact that might be overlooked by some on first viewing is the way in which Dexter packages his father's belongings. He does so in a way that is very similar to how he wraps up his victims.
This is almost certainly deliberate and what it is meant to mean is up for debate, but it can pass you by the first time around.
