10 Sons Of Anarchy Cameos You Probably Missed

It's easy to forget Sons of Anarchy starred Stephen King and Courtney Love.

Sons of Anarchy centres around an outlaw biker called Jax Teller who strives for a peaceful life but finds himself unable to escape from the growing conflicts in his motorcycle club. The series concluded in 2014, but Kurt Sutter's magnum opus is still fresh in viewers' minds thanks to the 2018 spin-off, Mayans MC.

It may have started off as "that show with the biker gangs" but it wasn't long before the Hamlet-inspired saga was one of the hottest tickets on television. As its popularity grew, Sons attracted a lot of big stars in the film and music industry.

Fans will remember performers like Peter Weller, David Hasselhoff, Tom Arnold, and Dave Navarro showing up, either in a stand-alone appearance or as a recurring character. But even if you are a devoted fan, there are some cameos you probably missed. You might not have noticed them because the celebrity's appearance was brief, they looked drastically different, or it was before they were famous.

Whether it's comedians, porn stars or Guns N' Roses band members, there's bound to be a few cameos you went over your head.

10. Robert Patrick

FX Productions

In 1991, Robert Patrick defined his career as the terrifying T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. If Patrick never acted again, he would still be viewed as a legend for playing one of the most iconic sci-fi villains in cinematic history.

Instead, Patrick kept himself busy. In fact, Patrick has appeared in almost every major show over the last few decades. He's starred in The X-Files, The Batman, Avatar: The Last Airbender, True Blood, Law & Order, Community, Psych, Stargate, The Sopranos, and countless others. With his track record of starring in hit series, it seemed inevitable he would pop up in Sons of Anarchy sooner or later.

Sure enough, he appeared in two episodes of Season 6 as Les Packer; the leader of the San Bernardino division of SAMCRO. Because his face is usually covered by sunglasses, a helmet or a hat, you might not have noticed this is the same guy who tangled with Arnold in James Cameron's sci-fi epic in the 1990s.

Despite his brief appearance, Packer proved to be such a popular character, Patrick reprised the role in the spin-off, Mayans MC.

9. DJ Ashba

Sons Of Anarchy Jenna Jameson
FX

Every once in a while, you'll be watching an episode of Sons of Anarchy when you'll suddenly notice musicians like Robb Reiner of Anvil, Rusty Coones of Attika 7, or Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction casually strolling by. Some singers like Henry Rollins and Marilyn Manson don't just make guest appearances; they play key roles that are entrenched in the main story.

Although heavy metal fans are bound to have recognised these rock stars, there is one cameo that nearly everyone missed. In one shot of Season 5 Episode 12, you can see the SAMCRO members talking to the lead guitarist of Sixx.A.M. and former member of Guns 'N' Roses, DJ Ashba.

Since Ashba is the only guy not wearing a motorcycle jacket, you'd assume the Pyromantic musician would be easy to spot. But since he appears for a split-second, you'll miss him if you blink. Even if you noticed Ashba, you mightn't even believe it's him.

Considering the singer and songwriter isn't credited on the Sons of Anarchy website, IMDB, or... the literal credits, many people believed Ashba was a lookalike.

8. Doug Jones

Sons Of Anarchy Jenna Jameson
MTV

When it comes to actors working in heavy makeup and elaborate prosthetics, Doug Jones is top tier. Due to his towering height, gaunt appearance, and double-jointed legs, this trained contortionist has made a living playing Mermen, fauns, ghosts, and aliens in films like Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson Peak, and The Shape of Water.

Despite earning over 150 acting credits, most people don't have a clue what Jones looks like, even if they're familiar with his work. Despite having major roles in properties like Star Trek and Hellboy, it's hard to recognise him since he rarely plays a character that shows his true face. In fact, it's hard to think of a time where he played an actual human!

So when he appeared in Season 6 of Sons as a police officer called Crane, even the biggest fans of Jones didn't bat an eyelid. He only appears in the episode, The Mad King, and doesn't do much so it's easy to miss him.

Of course, this isn't the first time Jones has worked with Ron Perlman - who plays Clay - with Perlman and Jones having worked together on the original Hellboy movies.

7. Jenna Jameson

Although SAMCRO is known for dealing with vehicles and weapons, they also do a lot of business in pornography. Because Otto's wife, Luann, has her own porn company, the club members regularly hook up with strippers and adult entertainers. Considering this is an integral part of the series (and SAMCRO buy their own porn company in the later seasons), it was no surprise when The Queen of Porn herself, Jenna Jameson, made an appearance.

The episode, Playing with Monsters, begins with Jax and his crew watching their studio recording a scene for the film, Skankenstein.

Jameson plays the scientist, Porn Doctor, who brings her creation to life by electrocuting her nipples. No, you didn't misread that. Jameson is absolutely terrible in the role, but then again she's supposed to be. This is porn, not Shakespeare.

Even though Jameson is the most famous porn actress ever, it's hard to recognise her. Not only is she hidden under a lot of makeup and a wig, but most viewers are too distracted by a zombie having her ta-tas shocked to notice anything else in the scene.

6. Courtney Love

Sons Of Anarchy Jenna Jameson
FX Productions

Despite the fact Courtney Love has made a successful career as a solo grunge artist, she's better-known for her dark past. Whether it's her struggles with crack cocaine, being arrested for her violent outbursts, or her tragic relationship with Kurt Cobain, Love has a reputation for being a loose canon. Unsurprisingly, this has led to her being regularly cast as loud and brash characters in films and television.

But in Sons of Anarchy, the Hole singer goes against type, playing a protective pre-kindergarten tutor called Ms Harrison. After finding cuts on Jax's son, Abel, Ms Harrison reports him to child services. When Abel's grandmother, Gemma, comes to the school to visit him, Ms Harrison confronts her and politely asks her to leave.

Because Love can turn on the crazy in a heartbeat, you half-expect her character to go berserk when Gemma shows up unannounced. But she doesn't. Instead, Ms Harrison is calm and collected when she orders Gemma to back off, which is a side rarely seen in Love's acting. Even though Ms Harrison appears in four episodes, most people don't recognise the famous musician since she acts so... well... normal.

5. Charisma Carpenter

Sons Of Anarchy Jenna Jameson
FX

In the penultimate episode of SOA, Gemma visits her father, who has been staying at a care home for many years. Upon entering the facility, she speaks to the administrative director, who is played by none other than Charisma Carpenter.

Carpenter has appeared in over a dozen TV shows, but it's safe to say she will forever be synonymous with her role as Cordelia Chase in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Although Cordelia started off in Buffy as the damsel-in-distress, it wasn't long before the airhead cheerleader became a regular character and one of the leads in the follow-up series, Angel. Carpenter is so good as playing Cordelia as a standoffish queen bee, it's pretty jarring to see her in SOA playing such a calm, caring woman.

Since she has a small role in Sons of Anarchy, a lot of people didn't recognise her, even if they were a die-hard fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Because the entire series was wrapping up in the following episode, most viewers were focusing on the plot to notice Carpenter's guest appearance.

4. Stephen King

Sons Of Anarchy Jenna Jameson
FX

In Season 3, Gemma's caretaker, Amelia, accidentally stabs herself to death (which is a typical day for the SAMCRO posse). To dispose of the body, Tig hires a professional "cleaner" called Bachman, who is played by visionary author Stephen King.

King may be a universal name, but some people didn't recognise him simply because they didn't know what he looked like. Even if you recognised King, it's easy to forget he starred in the show since he only made one appearance.

This iconic figure may be a gifted scribe, but he's never been the best actor. However, he seems perfectly cast as a character that chops up people for a living. As Bachman cups the corpse's breasts and measures the body to see if it'll fit down the slop sink, you can't help but think, "This guy has done this before."

The creator, Kurt Sutter, always had King in mind for the role, saying the master of horror would suit the "suitably nasty part". He even named the character Bachman as a reference to King's pseudonym, Richard Bachman.

Stephen King penned several of his novels under this nom de plume, including The Running Man and Thinner.

3. Lea Michele

Sons Of Anarchy Jenna Jameson
FX

In one of the last episodes, Gemma meets a young waitress called Gertie at a truck stop. Gemma is snappy with the girl at first but eventually warms to her. While sharing a cigarette, Gemma confides to Gertie how her son just lost his wife (but fails to mention she was the one who killed her).

You get so invested in Gemma's story, you may not have clocked that Gertie is portrayed by Glee's Lea Michele. According to the show's producer, Paris Barclay, the role was written for Michele since she reminded him of a young Gemma and wanted the waitress to mirror Katey Sagal's character in this scene. The two actresses had great chemistry since Sagal and Michele had worked together before on Glee.

Michele told Vulture that starring in the show was a dream come true since she had been obsessed with Sons of Anarchy for years. Anytime she was on a break while filming Glee, she rushed to her trailer to catch up with SOA. The producer was so happy with her performance, he wanted to bring her back but it was too late in the series to do so.

2. Joel McHale

Sons Of Anarchy Jenna Jameson
FX

While taking a break from shooting Community, Joel McHale appeared in two episodes of Sons of Anarchy. After Gemma meets his character, Warren, at a bar, she takes him back to his place to have sex. When she wakes up, she learns that Warren has stolen her money and drove off in her car. Jax and his crew manage to corner Warren and retrieve Gemma's money after a brief chase scene. Surprisingly, Warren is one of the few people to get on the wrong side of SAMCRO that didn't end up six feet under.

In the behind-the-scenes feature, Before the Anarchy, McHale explained how he was hired "to save the show". (It's very possible he was joking.) Because of McHale's comedy chops, you'd assume the Emmy-nominated actor was brought into SOA to inject some of his snarky, wisecracking humour.

But like most comedians who cameo on the series, McHale goes against type and plays his role straight. Although his performance is solid, he only had a minor stint in the show, making it easy to forget he starred in it in the first place.

1. The Founder Of Hells Angels

Sons Of Anarchy Jenna Jameson
FX Productions

It's abundantly clear that Sons of Anarchy is heavily inspired by the most famous motorcycle club, The Hells Angels. Not only did the club give Kurt Sutter their seal of approval, Hells Angels' most famous member, Sonny Barger, guest-starred in the show.

Sonny Barger is responsible for founding the Oakland, Californian section of Hells Angels in 1957. He's written five books about his group, which helped society gain a lot of insight, not just in Hells Angels, but motorcycle clubs in general.

In the show, Barger plays Lenny the Pimp; a convict who was imprisoned for killing three agents. In all his scenes, Lenny speaks while pressing into his throat, suggesting he has suffered a laryngectomy. If you thought this was a character choice, it wasn't. Due to a lifetime of heavy smoking, Barger developed throat cancer in the 1980s and had his vocal cords removed. Over time, he learned to speak by pressing into his oesophagus.

Although a lot of characters are killed off in the series, Lenny didn't get the chop. Considering his legacy helped create the series, it was courteous for Sutter to have the character see it to the end.
