David Gerrold is a popular author and screenwriter, contributing to both The Original Series and The Next Generation. He wrote one of the most famous episodes in all of Star Trek - The Trouble with Tribbles - and he followed that up with More Tribbles, More Troubles and Bern, both for The Animated Series.

He was one of a few original writers who were brought in early by Roddenberry to help get The Next Generation off the ground. Roddenberry's lawyer, Leonard Maizlish, seemed to exist purely to cause trouble on the set and Gerrold recounted several times where the lawyer attempted to pass off his own script revisions as Roddenberry's.

Gerrold wrote a script called Blood and Fire which featured two gay characters and was an allegory for the ongoing AIDS epidemic of the eighties. Roddenberry approved the script, before Maizlish informed the writer that the story would not be produced. He ended up calling Gerrold a f****t, after which the man quit.

His script would eventually be made but as fan production rather than as part of the main franchise.
