10 Star Trek Characters You Totally Forgot Existed

8. Major J Hayes And The MACOs

Steven Culp was an important part of the Xindi arc but it's easy to omit him from your memory given all the other factors going on in Enterprise's second best season.

Reknowned for other roles in Desperate Housewives and also as Riker's replacement in a deleted scene from Nemesis, Culp's Major Hayes clashed with Lt Malcolm Reed on a few occasions as the leader of the Military Assault Command Operations (MACO) team assigned to the Enterprise. One reason he's swallowed up in canon fog is that Culp doesn't come across as a believable soldier.

While the season and the story is a major (no pun intended) part of the four season prequel, Hayes seems to slip into the background as fat as he appears and is long gone before a warp engine is fired up in season four. Having the commandos aboard for the tricky voyage into the expanse was a cool idea at the time but one that would only be brought up again in Star Trek Beyond. In that instance Idris Elba's Balthazar Edison was revealed to be a former MACO who had fought both the Romulans and the Xindi.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
